Description and references
An extract from the dried fruit of the Norway
maple Acer plantanoides L., Aceraceae. Freshly
prepd solutions of acerin destroy E. coli and vaccinia
virus in 5 min but are less effective on the Staphylococcus Twort
virus. Phagicidal action also exists even in the presence of the
host cells. Extraction and properties: G. Fischer, Acta Pathol. Microbiol. Scand. 31, 433 (1952); 34, 482 (1954); Fischer et al., Experientia 10, 329
(1954).
Properties
Practically insol in methanol, ethanol, ether,
acetone. Does not dialyze through a cellophane membrane at room temp
but passes through a Seitz filter. Sodium chloride precipitates the
active principle in acerin preparations as does also normal serum
with 1:800 solns of acerin. Strong acerin preparations acquire reddish-brown
color after treatment with alkali and oxidation in air. In general,
the substance behaves similarly to vegetable tannins.
