Prepd by warming glycine with a slight excess of acetic anhydride in benzene: Radenhausen, J. Prakt. Chem. [2] 52, 437 (1895); by warming glycine in glacial acetic acid with the stoichiometric amount of acetic anhydride: Dakin, J. Biol. Chem. 82, 443 (1929).

Properties

Long needles from water, mp 206-208°. pK (25°) 3.64. Sol in water at 15° = 2.7%. Moderately soluble in alcohol. Slightly sol in acetone, chloroform, glacial acetic acid. Practically insol in ether, benzene. Forms stable salts with organic bases.
