Prepd from 4′-amino-4-biphenyldiazonium chloride by Sandmeyer's reaction: Gelmo, Ber. 39, 4176 (1906); by chlorination of 4-nitrodiphenyl and reduction of 4-chloro-4′-nitrodiphenyl with iron and HCl in ethanol: Belcher et al., J. Chem. Soc. 1953, 1334.

Crystals from light petroleum, mp 134° (Gelmo); mp 128° (Belcher). uv max (0.1N HCl): 254 nm (ε 22090). Sol in warm alcohol, ether, benzene, acetone, glacial acetic acid. Practically insol in water and alkalies.

Use

As a reagent in the determination of sulfur, in coal, rubber, etc.
