Prepd by neutralizing dl-lactic acid with NH4OH: Costello, Filachione, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 75, 1242 (1953).

Properties

Crystals from propanol, mp 91-94°. Sol in water, glycerol, 95% alc; slightly sol in methanol; practically insol in ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, and n-butyl alcohols, ether, acetone, ethyl acetate. For a 78.8% by wt soln: nD20 1.4543, nD25 1.4536, nD40 1.4503; d420 1.2006, d425 1.1984, d440 1.1904.

Therapeutic Category (Veterinary)

Has been used for bovine ketosis.
