Prepd from mandelic acid and NH3 or excess of strong NH3-water: Tabern et al., US 2220692 (1941 to Abbott); Baker, US 2209314 (1941 to Squibb).

Properties

Very deliquescent, cryst powder; odorless or with slight odor; discolors in light. Very sol in water, sparingly in alc. The aq soln is slightly acid to litmus. Keep tightly closed and protected from light.
