Description and references

Prepd from ZrO2CO2.8H2O, NH4HCO3 and (NH4)2CO3: Blumenthal, J. Chem. Educ. 39, 604 (1962).

Derivative

Dihydrate.

Properties

Large prisms from water. Unstable in air, gradually evolving carbon dioxide and ammonia. Sol in water. Marketed as aq soln: d2424 1.238. The aq soln is moderately stable at room temp, although, after standing a month or so, it is likely to deposit hydrous zirconia. At temps above 60° aq solns dec rapidly.

Use

Water-repellent. Leaves a zirconium residue after the evaporation of ammonia and carbon dioxide, without leaving other cations or anions.
