From rhizome of Canadian hemp, Apocynum cannabinum L., Apocynaceae and from A. androsaemifolium: Finnemore, J. Chem. Soc. 93, 1513, 1520 (1908). Also from the essential oil (butter) of the rhizomes of Iris spp., Iridaceae: Naves, Helv. Chim. Acta 32, 1351 (1949).

Properties

Fine needles from water, mp 115°. bp 295-300°. Faint vanilla odor. Slightly sol in cold, freely in hot water, alc, benzene, chloroform, ether. Practically insol in petr ether.
