Prepd by refluxing a mixture of 126 g benzyl chloride, 76 g thiourea, and 200 ml alcohol for 0.5 hr: Donleavy, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 58, 1004 (1936).

Properties

Crystals from alc or dil HCl, mp 172-174°. Metastable form, mp 146-148°. Can be converted to the higher melting form by dissolving in alcohol and seeding with crystals, mp 172-174°.

Use

Reagent for cobalt and nickel; identification and separation of carboxylic, sulfinic, and sulfonic acid.
