Prepd by vapor-phase reaction of anhydr ether
with BF3: Laubengayer, Finlay, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 65, 884 (1943).
Properties
Fuming liquid, immediately hydrolyzed by moisture
in air. d425 1.125. bp 125.7°. mp 60.4°. nD20 1.348. Heat of formation: 12.5 kcal.
Heat of soln at 0° in ether: 2.7 kcal.Caution
On decomposition forms highly toxic
fumes of fluorides.Use
Catalyst in acetylation, alkylation, polymerization,
dehydration, and condensation reactions.
