Description and references

Three isomers exist: The β-glycerophosphoric acid calcium salt, d(+)- and l(-)-α-glycerophosphoric acid calcium salt. Commercial product is a mixture of calcium β- and dl-α-glycerophosphates: Toal, Phillips, J. Pharm. Pharmacol. 1, 869 (1949). Prepn of the calcium salt of the α- and β-acids: King, Pyman, J. Chem. Soc. 105, 1238 (1914); Toal, Phillips, loc. cit. Sepn of the α-acid from β- and polyglycerophosphoric acids via the α-acid calcium salt: Carrara, IT 460219 (1950), C.A. 46, 5077a (1952). Chemical structure

Properties

Commercial product, fine, odorless, almost tasteless, slightly hygroscopic powder; dec >170°. Sol in about 50 parts water; almost insol in alc, boiling water. Soly in water is increased by citric or lactic acid. The aq soln is alkaline.

Mixture with calcium lactate.

Use

In dentifrices, baking powder, as food stabilizer.
