Antibiotic substance produced by Streptomyces collinus: Brockmann, Renneberg, Naturwissenschaften 40, 166 (1953); DE 918162 (1954 to Bayer). Identity with α-rubromycin: Brockmann et al., Tetrahedron Lett. 1966, 3525. Structure: Brockmann, Zeeck, Ber. 103, 1709 (1970). Shows considerable in vitro activity against Staph. aureus.

Orange prisms from chloroform-methanol, mp 280-282°. Moderately sol in chloroform, acetone, dioxane; sparingly sol in ether, low-molecular alcohols. Practically insol in petr ether, water, aq sodium bicarbonate soln.
