Properties
Bright blue microcrystals with purple lustre;
sol in 98% H2SO4 from which it can be almost
quantitatively pptd by dilution with water. Practically insol in
water, alcohol, and hydrocarbons. Stable toward heat (crystalline
and analytically pure sublimate obtained at about 580° in low pressure
atmosphere of nitrogen or carbon dioxide), alkalies, dilute acids.
Dec by hot nitric acid, or dilute acid permanganate to yield phthalimide.
Exists in two forms: the thermodynamically less stable, redder α-form
is a better pigment than the more stable greener β-form. In the presence
of aromatic solvents, heat, high shear, etc., α-form is converted
to β-form.Use
In inks and paints. In polypropylene sutures.
