Prepd by bromination of salicylaldehyde in glacial acetic acid with cooling: Wentworth, Brady, J. Chem. Soc. 117, 1043 (1920); Brewster, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 46, 2464 (1924); by bromination in the presence of sodium acetate in glacial acetic acid at 50°: Lindemann, Forth, Ann. 435, 223 (1924).

Properties

Pale yellow prisms, mp 86°. Sublimes forming leaflets and needles. Volatile with steam. Sparingly sol in water. Aq solns are yellow. Readily sol in ether, benzene, chloroform, hot petr ether, alcohol, glacial acetic acid.
