Caro's acid and oxidizing the 3-nitro-4-nitrosotoluene with potassium
dichromate: Langley, Org. Synth. 22, 47 (1942); by oxidation of 3,4-dinitrotoluene: Goldstein,
Voegeli, Helv. Chim. Acta 26, 475 (1943).
Properties
Crystals from water + alc. Bitter taste. mp 166°; (mp 165.5-166.5°, Goldstein). 0.673 g dissolves in 100 parts
water at 25°. Freely sol in alc, ether and hot water. Sublimes.Use
In quantitative sugar analysis.
