4540. Graphite Fluoride

Nomenclature

CAS number: 11113-63-6
Fluorine compd with graphite.

Description and references

Non-wettable layered solid, CFx, (0.5<x<1.3), obtained by direct fluorination of graphite at high temp. Two covalent forms have been produced by controlling the quality of the graphite and the reaction temp: (CF)n at (300°-600°) and (C2F)n at (350°-400°). Composition and color are a function of the fluorination temp; the F/C ratio increases with increasing temp, and color changes from black to gray to white. Prepn: O. Ruff, O. Bretschneider, Z. Anorg.
