Prepd as the sodium salt by reduction of sodium glucuronate with sodium amalgam in alkaline medium: Fischer, Piloty, Ber. 24, 525 (1891); from d-gulonic acid γ-lactone: Rehorst, Naumann, ibid. 77, 24 (1944).
