Prepd from heptaldehyde by reduction with iron filings in dil acetic acid: Clarke, Dreger, Org. Synth. 6, 52 (1926); cf. Noller, Bannerot, ibid. 14, 91 (1934); ibid. coll. vol. I (2nd ed., 1941) p 304. Other methods include the reaction between pentane and ethylene oxide in the presence of anhydr aluminum bromide: I. G.
