Prepd from heptaldehyde by reduction with iron filings in dil acetic acid: Clarke, Dreger, Org. Synth. 6, 52 (1926); cf. Noller, Bannerot, ibid. 14, 91 (1934); ibid. coll. vol. I (2nd ed., 1941) p 304. Other methods include the reaction between pentane and ethylene oxide in the presence of anhydr aluminum bromide: I. G. Farbenind, FR 716604, C.A. 26, 2198 (1932); and the action of amyl magnesium bromide on ethylene oxide: Vaughn et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 55, 4207 (1933).
