Prepd industrially by reacting aniline, carbon
disulfide, and sulfur at elevated press. and temps: Kelly, US 1631871. Purification by treatment with a per-acid salt in alkaline medium:
Weyker, Ebel, US 2730528 (1956 to Am. Cyanamid). Improved process: Szlatinay, US 3031073 (1962 to Monsanto).
Properties
Pale yellow, monoclinic needles or leaflets.
Disagreeable odor. d 1.42. mp 180.2-181.7° (the technical product mp 170-175°). Practically insol in water. Soly at 25° (g/100 ml) in alcohol:
2.0; ether 1.0; acetone 10.0; benzene 1.0; carbon tetrachloride <0.2;
naphtha <0.5. Moderately sol in glacial acetic acid. Sol in alkalies
and alkali carbonate solns.Derivative
Zinc salt.
