Obtained by passing HCl gas into a hot methanol soln of nicotinic acid: Engler, Ber. 27, 1787 (1894); by treatment with tetramethylammonium hydroxide in methanol: Prelog, Piantanida, Z. Physiol. Chem. 244, 56 (1936); by heating a mixture of sulfuric acid, selenium and quinoline, followed by refluxing with methanol: Kaufman, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 67, 497 (1945); from nicotinyl chloride hydrochloride and methanol in pyridine: Charonnat et al., Bull. Soc. Chim. Fr. 1948, 1014.
