Prepd by heating dimethylaniline with 40% formaldehyde
and concd HCl: Mekel, DE 1026322 (1958 to BASF); Hey, Sanderson, J. Chem. Soc. 1960, 3203; from
dimethylaniline + diacetylperoxide: Horner et al., Ann. 626, 1 (1959); from dimethylaniline
+ tert-butylperbenzoate: Sosnovsky, Yang, J. Org. Chem. 25, 899 (1960).
Properties
Lustrous leaflets, mp 90-91°. Sublimes without decompn. bp 390°; bp0.1 155-157°. Insol
in water. Sol in benzene, ether, carbon disulfide, acids; slightly
sol in cold alcohol; more sol in hot alcohol.Caution
This substance is reasonably anticipated

Has been used in manufacture of dyes. As reagent
