Prepd by the condensation of β-naphthol with ethylene chlorohydrin: Rindfusz et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 42, 157, 164, 165 (1920); Kirner, Richter, ibid. 51, 3409 (1929); by heating β-naphthol with ethylene oxide and sodium ethoxide in alcohol: Boyd, Marle, J. Chem. Soc. 105, 2117 (1914).

Properties

Crystals from benzene + petr ether, mp 76.7°. Insoluble in water. One gram dissolves in 4 g of 95% alcohol, in 2 g acetone; also sol in ether, chloroform. uv max (0.004% in chloroform): 273, 328 nm (E ≈1.00, ≈0.395).
