Prepd by treating 5-nitrofurfural with hydroxylamine in alcohol: Ikeda, C.A. 50, 10701 (1956). Claimed in Stillman et al., US 2319481 (1943 to Norwich Pharmacal).

Properties

Tasteless, pale yellow or greenish crystals from ethanol. Darkens on exposure to light. mp 156° (Ikeda); mp 163-164° (Stillman et al.). Soly at 25° in water: ≈1 g/l, in methanol: 89.0 g/l, in 95% ethanol: 39.0 g/l.
