or 2-methyl-3-butanol with phenol in the presence of aluminum chloride:

Crystals, mp 94-95°. bp 262.5°, bp740 248-250°, bp15 138.5°, bp3 112-120°. d420 0.962. Practically insol in water. Sol in alcohol, ether,
benzene, chloroform. LD50 orally in rats: 3.08 g/kg (Smyth).Use
In the manuf of oil-soluble resins; has been recommended
as a germicide and fumigant; intermediate for organic mercury germicides,
for pesticides, for chemicals used in rubber and petroleum industries.
