Prepd by heating ammonium propionate under pressure: Hofmann, Ber. 15, 981 (1882); by dropping propionyl chloride into cooled ammonia water: Aschan, Ber. 31, 2347 (1898).

Properties

Orthorhombic platelets from benzene. d420 1.0335; d480 0.9597; mp 79°; bp 222.2°. Volatile with steam. nD110 1.4160. Freely sol in water, alcohol, ether, chloroform.
