Prepd by heating 2-aminobenzoic acid with 2-nitrobenzoic acid, glycerol and sulfuric acid: Schlosser, Skraup, Monatsh. Chem. 2, 530 (1881); by oxidizing 8-quinolylaldehyde with chromic acid: Howitz, Ber. 35, 1275 (1902).

Needles from water. mp 186-187.5°. Sublimes above mp. Slightly sol in cold water, appreciably sol in hot water and in alcohol. Freely sol in acids and alkalies.

Use

Detection of cadmium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, silver, thallium; quantitative determination of copper.
