Br 77.66%, Na 22.34%.
NaBr.
Description and references
Prepd commercially by adding some excess bromine
to a sodium hydroxide soln forming a mixture of bromide and bromate.
The reaction products are evaporated to dryness and treated with
carbon to reduce the bromate to bromide. Prepn: J. H. van der Meulen, US 1775598 (1930). Toxicity study: Smith, Hambourger, J. Pharmacol. Exp. Ther. 55, 200
(1935). Brief review of physical and chemical properties and pharmacology:
T. O. Soine, C. O. Wilson, Roger's Inorganic
Pharmaceutical Chemistry (Lea & Febiger, Philadelphia,
8th ed., 1967) pp 213-216.
Properties
White crystals, granules or powder; saline, feebly
bitter taste. Absorbs moisture from air but is not deliquescent.
d 3.21. mp 755°; volatilizes at somewhat
higher temp. One gram dissolves in 1.1 ml water, about 16 ml alcohol,
6 ml methanol. The aq soln is practically neutral. pH 6.5-8.0. Keep well closed. From water of room temp,
sodium bromide crystallizes with 2H2O in the form of colorless
crystals. Incompat. Acids, alkaloidal and heavy metal
salts. LD50 orally in rats: 3.5 g/kg (Smith, Hambourger).Use
In photography. Standard in ion chromatography.
