U.S.P. NaI is at least 99% pure.
Properties
White, odorless, deliquesc crystals or granules.
Gradually absorbs up to about 5% ( mol) moisture on exposure to
air. Slowly becomes brown in the air due to liberation of iodine.
Its aq soln is similarly affected. d 3.67. mp 651°. One gram dissolves in 0.5 ml water, ≈2 ml alc, 1 ml glycerol;
sol in acetone. It is made slightly alkaline to render it more stable.
pH: 8-9.5. Keep well closed and protected
from light. At ordinary room temp crystallizes from water
with 2H2O in the form of colorless, prismatic crystals.

Iodometric reagent.
