Prepd by hydrogenation of testosterone: Butenandt et al., Ber. 68, 2097 (1935); from dehydroepiandrosterone: Ruzicka, Kagi, Helv. Chim. Acta 20, 1557 (1937); Ruzicka et al., ibid. 24, 1151 (1941); from 3,17-androstandione: Oliveto, Hershburg, US 2927921 (1960 to Schering).

Crystals from ethyl acetate + hexane. Sublimes0.01 135°. mp 181°. [α]D20 +32.4° (alcohol). Infrared absorption data: J. Am. Chem. Soc. 75, 903 (1953). Sol in acetone, ether, alcohol, ethyl acetate. Practically insol in water.
