Description and references
Made by heating castor oil or ricinoleic acid
with nitric acid: Dominguez, Lopez, Ciencia
(Mexico City) 20, 73 (1959), C.A. 54, 18990f (1960). Prepn
from diethyl malonate + ω-bromocapronitrile: Cason et al., J. Org. Chem. 14, 37 (1949); by oxidation of oleic acid
with nitric acid: Cavanaugh, Weir, US 2560156 (1951 to du Pont).
Properties
Crystals, mp 140-144°. bp100 279°. Sublimes at 300° without decompn.
One gram dissolves in 625 ml water, 172 ml ether; sol in alcohol;
almost insol in chloroform.Use
In the plastics industry.
