White crystals or cryst powder. Colored pink
by traces of iron. mp ≈120° when anhydr; at higher temp dec into phenol and salicylic acid.
Very sol in water or alcohol; sol in ether. Generally sol in polar
solvents. Keep well closed and protected from
light.Caution
Irritating to skin, mucous membranes.Use
Clinical reagent for albumin in urine; colorimetric
reagent for ferric ion with which it gives a violet color. It is
a trifunctional aromatic compound, undergoing reactions typical of
phenols, carboxylic and sulfonic acid groups. Suggested industrial
uses: metal chelating agent, intermediate in the manuf of surface-active
agents, organic catalysts and grease additives.
