Properties

Usually marketed in 10% aq soln. Strong ammonia-like odor. d425 ≈1.00. The free base is known only in soln or as a solid pentahydrate, forming colorless, deliquesc needles, mp 63°. On distillation, it dec to trimethylamine and CH3OH. It is a very strong base, readily absorbing CO2 from the air. Corrosive. Keep well closed.
