Perennial herb, Valeriana officinalis L., Valerianaceae. Medicinal portions are the dried rhizomes and roots; traditionally used to treat insomnia and anxiety. Habit. Europe, Northern Asia; naturalized in eastern U.S. Numerous other species exist throughout the world which are also used medicinally. Constit.
