Prepn according to the equation ZrCl4 + 4N2O5 → Zr(NO3)4 + 4NO2Cl: Field, Hardy, Proc. Chem. Soc. London 1962, 76. Pentahydrate obtained from strong nitric acid. The zirconium nitrate of commerce is usually somewhat basic.

Pentahydrate.

Properties

White, very hygroscopic crystals or white pieces or scales. Very sol in water; sol in alcohol. The aq soln is acid to litmus. Keep tightly closed.
