Cr 40.63%, F 59.37%.
Description and references
Prepd by reaction of F2 with Cr
or CrCl3: von Wartenberg, Z. Anorg.
Allg. Chem. 247, 136 (1941); Clark, Sadana, Can. J. Chem. 43, 50 (1964).
Properties
Very dark greenish-black, amorphous solid; on
exposure to moist air becomes brown on surface due to hydrolysis.
mp (estimated) 277°:
Fergusson in Halogen Chemistry Vol. 3, V. Gutmann, Ed. (Academic Press, New York, 1967)
p 242. bp ≈400° evolving steel-blue vapor; sublimes in vacuo above 100°; d 2.89. Less reactive
than CrF3, does not readily form Werner complexes; does
not react with NH3, SO2, SO3, pyridine.
Sol in water with rapid hydrolysis; practically insol in most organic
solvents. Can be stored indefinitely in vacuo in well
dried Pyrex or silica vessels.Status
