Description and references

Prepd from Hg2CO3 + HF: Henne, Renoll, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 60, 1060 (1938); also by addition of sodium fluoride to mercurous nitrate soln. Probably formed in the reaction between fluorine and mercury at room temp: Emeléus in Fluorine Chemistry vol. 1, J. H. Simons, Ed. (New York, 1950) p 39. The prepn should be carried out in the dark.

Properties

Small, yellow cubic crystals, d415 8.73. mp 570° (dec). Sublimes at ≈240°. The crystals blacken in light or with ammonia fumes. Hydrolyzed in water to form mercury, mercuric oxide and hydrofluoric acid.
