Prepd by condensing dry potassium carbazole with chloroethyl acetate and saponifying the resulting ester with 35% sodium hydroxide: DE 255304; Chem. Zentralbl. 1913, I, 350; Frdl. 11, 171 (1912-14). See also: Seka, Ber. 57, 1527 (1924).

Properties

Leaflets from ethyl acetate, mp 215°. Soluble in ether, glacial acetic acid, alcohol, chloroform, xylene. On heating to 240-250° it yields N-methylcarbazole.
