Yellow pigment from ergot. Diastereoisomer of secalonic acids.

Properties

Pale yellow needles from chloroform, mp 268-270°; pale yellow plates from glacial acetic acid, mp 250-257°. [α]D20 3 to +34° (c = 1.11 in pyridine). uv max (glacial acetic acid): 335 nm (log ε 4.57). One part sol in 1000 parts boiling chloroform; in 800-1000 parts boiling glacial acetic acid.
