Prepd by oxidation of 2,2′-dimethoxybenzoin, followed by nitration and demethylation of the resulting 2,2′-dimethoxybenzil: Moureu et al., Bull. Soc. Chim. Fr. 1951 M, 741; 1955 M, 1155.

Properties

Pale yellow needles from acetone, dec 304°. Soly in water about 0.1 mg/ml H2O. Sparingly sol in the usual organic solvents. Sol in aq 10% NaOH solns with decompn to sodium 5-nitrosalicylate.
