β-Sitosterol
22,23-Dihydrostigmasterol, stigmast-5-en-3β-ol; C29H50O = 414.7 (83-46-5)
White or almost white powder, practically insoluble in water, sparingly soluble in tetrahydrofuran.
Content, minimum 75.0% m/m (dried substance).
Assay Gas chromatography (2.2.28), as prescribed in the monograph Phytosterol (1911).
Test solution Dissolve 0.100 g of the substance to be examined in tetrahydrofuran and dilute to 10.0 mL with the same solvent. Introduce 100 μL of this solution into a suitable 3 mL flask and evaporate to dryness under nitrogen. To the residue add 100 μL of a freshly prepared mixture of 50 μL of 1-methylimidazole and 1.0 mL of heptafluoro-N-methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl)butanamide. Close the flask tightly and heat at 100° for 15 minutes. Allow to cool.
Injection 1 μL of the test solution.
