p-Anisidine
C7H9NO = 123.2 (104-94-9)
General reagent grade of commerce containing not less than 97.0% of C7H9NO.
Caution p-Anisidine is a skin irritant and sensitiser.
Store protected from light at 0° to 4°.
On storage, p-anisidine tends to darken as a result of oxidation. A discoloured reagent can be reduced and decolorised in the following manner. Dissolve 20 g of the reagent in 500 mL of water at 75°. Add 1 g of sodium sulfite and 10 g of activated charcoal and stir for 5 minutes. Filter, cool the filtrate to about 0° and allow to stand at this temperature for at least 4 hours. Filter, wash the crystals with a small quantity of water at about 0° and dry the crystals at a pressure of 2 kPa over phosphorus pentoxide.
