Iontophoresis uses an electric vield to increase the permeation of drugs delivered transdermallfy [256,257]. Permeation is proportional to the electric current. Therefore, pulsatile delivery can be obtained by an on-off switch in the circuitry, allowing electric current across the device [258]. Iontophoresis is further advanced than any of the other technologies mentioned above and several human clinical trials have been performed with, for example, nanopeptide leuprolide [259] and fentanyl and morphine for patient-controlled post-operative analgesia [259,260].
