Choosing who in the function deserves and merits being on a project team becomes a very important decision for the organization. Although the ultimate responsibility for appointing team members resides primarily within the function and must be the primary responsibility of the functional manager, it is critical that the project leader also play a role in this process and provide input before final decisions are made. If concerns need to be raised about the appointment of a team member because of past performance or personal reasons, it is better that these concerns are raised before the individual is appointed to a project team. A responsible project leader must make performance expectations known and not compromise the high standards demanded from everyone, including the leader. |

Although the size of a project team varies widely, it usually ranges between 10 to 20 team members. Despite its size, however, there are usually only a few individuals on the team who wind up as the key project drivers. Most often these individuals come from the clinical, marketing, and regulatory departments. The leader must cultivate special relationships with these individuals because of the need to rely more on this small group than on others on the team. Particular attention must be paid so that this core group is aligned and agrees on key strategic initiatives and on those critical project decisions which significantly affect the project's future success. Although the project leader should pay particular attention to these team members, other members of the team must not be alienated and wind up creating a two-tier system of haves and have nots. All members of the project team are and must feel that they are contributors to the team process, that their opinions are valued, and that they can and are in fact encouraged to participate actively during team discussion and decision making. |
