(as a team) can be measured. In addition, team members also have the opportunity to develop their own individual goals within this framework in which they can tie their individual goals to the team goals and ensure that their own goals do not conflict with those proposed by other team members. Sharing of individual goals within the team is a critical activity enabling each team member to know what others are planning and helping avoid situations where conflicting expectations arise over the projected availability of key project deliverables throughout the year. This is an important part of the overall process and as such needs the active involvement of the project leader to ensure optimal collaboration and coordination among all team members.
It would be extremely productive if the project leader took the time to meet with each team member to review individual project goals and objectives and to ensure agreement with what is being proposed. The project leader must be confident that these goals also have the support of management and that the requisite resources are committed so that each team member successfully completes the agreed upon tasks as scheduled. If required, discussion about individual goals and target dates can certainly involve the team member, project leader, and functional manager. However, it is usually preferable that the team member first reach agreement with his own management so that particularly sensitive department-related issues and problems are discussed and resolved within the function (see Fig. 3).

Meeting Aggressive Time Lines.
A key challenge which the project leader must address is the often expressed concern that target dates once committed become etched in stone. During the normal course of drug development, new scientific findings often arise which require initiating additional unplanned studies or spending additional time understanding study findings. Many believe that management is often reluctant to change dates once they are agreed to, despite apparent
