A.
Communication
For the long haul, the most important factor is developing and fostering multiple and open communication channels. Communication needs to flow up, down, and across, clearly and unencumbered. The more filters in place, the lower the chance that a true picture will emerge. Problems will occur within the alliance. The successful alliances will see and act on those concerns before they become divisive perceptions.
B.
Long-Term Commitment
As time passes in any relationship, it is easy to become passive and begin to take things for granted. It is easy to assume that things will continue as they have been, and therefore, the amount of attention paid to the partner and/or the alliance diminishes. If a perception is created that one partner is taking the other for granted or no longer cares, it is very easy for the alliance overall to deteriorate.
When dealing with organizations or in any personal relationship, it takes a lot less energy to maintain a positive environment than it does to reverse a negative situation or perception. If there is a reduction in the amount of energy, effort, or commitment to any relationship, either perceived or real, negative consequences are probable. Therefore, it is advisable to maintain an appropriate level of enthusiasm and commitment to ensure that the alliance continues on a positive trend, rather than spend an excessive amount of time and effort turning around a negative perception or loss of motivation.
In many cases, one of the easiest ways to keep the alliance project in the forefront is to tie its success and progress to individuals' performance assessment. If the work is directly tied to an overall performance assessment, it is unlikely to be forgotten or overlooked. This approach applies to both the workers and the management staff. Managers must also feel that their attention and performance rank are directly tied to the timely progress of the alliance's project.
Both parties should clearly understand, hopefully, before the alliance is consummated, that both partners will have to commit a lot of time and effort continually to insure the long-term success of the alliance. Success of alliance projects does not just happen, it is achieved by patience and commitment.
