Also, it is next to impossible to have a change in priority within one organization without having it become public knowledge in the other. By this time, hopefully, good communication patterns have been established among the people doing the work. If there is a change, that information will be discussed, if for nothing else, to explain why certain resources are not available or why a study is taking longer to complete than anticipated. If changes in priority are kept quiet, the alliance is dealt a major blow to its trust, openness, and respect for the other party. |

On the other hand, an upward shift in priority can rejuvenate a stagnating effort or pump new enthusiasm into a project that has lost a bit of its luster over time. This may very well result from the positive outcome of a given study or a positive change in environmental conditions. In any event, such a change will increase interest and motivation among all parties concerned. |

As time passes, your partner has had an opportunity to learn all there is to know about you. If the relationship is growing and prospering, your partner has learned how to work with you and accept all of your faults and idiosyncrasies. In addition, you have done the same with your partner. If the alliance cooperation level seems to be fading, perhaps, there are specific internal corporate quirks in either company that simply irritate the other partner. If the alliance is to develop and prosper, a mechanism must be defined and used to address these issues. |

During the course of any relationship, many, if not all, of your secrets will become known by your partner. In an alliance setting, there is a good possibility that all of your strengths and weaknesses will become obvious to your partner, and theirs to you. In many cases, this is an opportunity to learn and grow but, in some cases, can be seen as a threat. On the positive side, we all know that no one has the market cornered on ideas. Under that philosophy, an alliance provides each partner with an opportunity to learn from each other and adopt practices, procedures, or approaches to enhance your own ability to develop competitive advantages or organizational efficiencies. On the negative side, your current competitive advantages may become known by your partner, and therefore, could no longer be considered an advantage. |
