Epidemic typhus
Description
Epidemic typhus is caused by gram-negative rickettsia species in the typhus biogroup that are transmitted by infective louse and flea. The disease is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas. Most patients present with an acute febrile disease with constitutional symptom and maculopapular exanthema.
