Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is an often fatal infectious disease caused by orthohantaviruses in the order Bunyavirales of -ssRNA viruses. Rodents have long been considered to be the primary reservoir hosts of hantaviruses. However, recent discoveries have revealed that hantaviruses infect a more diverse range of mammalian hosts, particularly Chiroptera and Soricomorpha.
