Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) of the Paramyxoviridae family is a major cause of acute lower respiratory tract illness in infants and young children. It affects the elderly and immunocompromised individuals as well. Although RSV was discovered half a century ago, no effective treatment for the infection exists.
