Prepd from 2,5-diaminothiophenol by boiling with concd formic acid or from 6-nitrobenzothiazole by reduction with tin and HCl: Mylius, Thesis (Berlin, 1883).

Prisms from water, mp 87°. Sol in alcohol. Practically insol in water and ether.

In the prepn of azo dyes.
