Description and references

Commercial product contains 95-97% salt with acetic acid and some water. Prepd from acetic acid and NH3: Zuffanti, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 63, 3123 (1941). Toxicity data: Welch et al., J. Lab. Clin. Med. 29, 809 (1944).

Properties

Deliquesc crystals or crystalline masses. Slight acetous odor. d 1.07. mp 114° (Zuffanti, loc. cit.). Tends to lose NH3. Sol in less than 1 part water; freely sol in alc; slightly sol in acetone. Very concd aq soln is slightly acid; a 0.5 molar aq soln has pH 7.0. Keep cool and tightly closed. LD i.v. in mice: 1.8 mg (NH4+)/20g (Welch).

Properties

Colorless, clear liquid; acid reaction to litmus. Prepd from 1 g ammonium carbonate, 20 ml dil acetic acid (6%). Contains 6.5-7.5% CH3COONH4.

Use

Preserving meats, dyeing, stripping; as a reagent in analytical chemistry, e.g., for determining Pb, Fe; separating PbSO4 from other sulfates. In buffer solutions.
